Rolex Fastnet Race Day 3 – Happy Birthday Michelle! Playing Around birthday girl, Michelle Falconer was awoken at midnight to the strains of ‘Happy Birthday to you’ coming from the rest of her tem-mates and more importantly, a chocolate birthday cake to share with everyone! The upbeat mood onboard has certainly been reflected in their position this afternoon, as they have once again been steadily improving their rankings and are now lying 18th, 12.3 miles behind the leader but travelling at an impressive 7.5 knots. They are a happy boat but skipper Pete has said he has now run out of jokes, and can we send him some more! Jaguar Logic has consolidated their position during today and are still in 24th, around mid-fleet. They have headed north of the Rhumb line and are heading into what seems like slightly more wind in the Northern part of the course. Only time will tell if this was a good tactic. On the other hand, Puma Logic have taken a more southerly route below the Rhumb line and have suffered a little today, now lying in 9th place overall. However, boat speed is still good, and the position is relative to where the yacht is pointing. At the moment, Puma is pointing away from the next mark of the course (Fastnet Rock) and therefore their respective ETA there will be hampered hence the slight fall from the top 5. When she tacks back again, and points more towards the Rock, we may see her position improve yet again. Today has been once of sunshine, high temperatures and classic sailing, all be it a little quieter than the crews would wish. A little more wind would be welcome. Dinner onboard tonight for the crew is Home-made Lasagne on Playing Around, Home-made Spaghetti Bolognaise on Jaguar Logic and Boil-in-the-bag Gloucester Old-Spot Pork Meatballs in Tomato sauce with Pasta. It is worth noting here that we have only 1 vegetarian in the fleet, Richard from Puma. It is very difficult to find totally vegetarian boil-in-the-gag apart from a fantastic Mushroom Strogonoff from Tanfield Foods, so Richard has been a very lucky boy and has been eating fresh, home-made vegetarian food. I believe tonight he has Fish Pie. He had better watch his back as this is one of Skipper Philippe’s favourite things….I wonder who will get there first!! |
